HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Officials say a 3-year-old toddler at a Texas apartment got their hands on a gun that led to the deadly shooting of another child.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called out to an apartment for a shooting at around 7:30 p.m., according to KTRK.
A 3-year-old toddler got access to a gun and accidentally shot a 4-year-old, KHOU reported.
Gonzalez confirmed on Twitter that the 4-year-old died at the scene from their injuries.
In a news conference late Sunday, Gonzalez said that there were about five adults and two toddlers inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, according to KHOU.
“At some point, it appears that one parent thought the other was maybe watching the children when in fact the two toddlers were basically unsupervised in the bedroom. The 3-year-old gained access to a loaded semi-automatic pistol,” Gonzalez said.
Family members heard a single gunshot and ran into the room. They found the 4-year-old on the floor unresponsive. They then secured the gun and called 911, Gonzalez said, KHOU reported.
Gonzalez said that both toddlers are girls and are said to be siblings who lived at the apartment with their parents, according to KHOU. It is unclear if any charges will be filed.
