School districts dealing with snow days as Mother Nature wreaks havoc on Green Country

TULSA, Okla. — Every school district has its own approach to dealing with inclement weather. Some offer distance learning and others are using up snow days.

Chris Payne, the chief communications officer for Union Public Schools tells us classes were canceled again on Thursday out of concern.

Drone video FOX23 shot at the bus barn shows just what the Union Public Schools were up against Thursday morning.

“A bus driver couldn’t even get the bus, there was so much ice,” said Payne. “You’re going to have buses coming out of neighborhoods that are really icy and slick, trying to come out and then they cannot turn and stop on a dime.”

Payne says the decision to call snow days and not move to distance learning was impacted by concerns for student safety and the timing of the storm.

“We probably had 90% of kids at home on Monday with no device to do it on so that was not really an option at the time,” said Payne.

The district has five show days built into its calendar. So far they have used four.

Students will return to class on Friday.
