New, healthier peanut developed in Oklahoma

Love peanuts, but wish they were better for you?

You’re in luck.

Granted, peanuts aren’t that bad to begin with, but now there’s an even healthier option.

The new variety, called Olé, has more oelic acid (the stuff that’s good for you).

Per the USDA, Oleic acid is a beneficial monounsaturated fatty acid, and the high oleic acid levels in the peanut make its oil a heart-healthy one for consumers. Growers like the new variety because of its disease resistance and potential for high yield and grade.

Researchers hope to commercially produce Olé later this year.
