Laderika Smith admitted to police she locked her five year old daughter in a bedroom with a loaded .38 caliber pistol while she went to the store.
When she returned home Smith found her daughter in the floor with a gunshot wound to the head.
Cops in New Orleans said the child found the gun and shot herself in the head.
The little girl was taken to the hospital but it she was taken off life support Sunday afternoon.
Charges against Smith started out as child cruelty but jumped to second degree murder after her daughter was taken off life support.
