Kendall-Whittier grade school evacuated because of smoke odor

Evacuations were ordered at Kendall Whittier elementary school about 1130 this morning.

Maintenance workers were repairing the air-conditioning system after a weekend copper theft, and when they turned the system on, it let out a slight electrical smoke smell which prompted the evacuation.

Firefighters tell KRMG that the students were all evacuated from the school by the time firefighters arrived.

After checking everything out, firefighters determined that the building was safe to reenter and the all clear was given.

That happened around 11:50 this morning.
