Flash Flood Watch through Saturday evening

TULSA — Northeast Oklahoma will likely see a lot of rainfall Friday and Saturday, with the potential of flash flooding across the region through Saturday evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch until 7:00 p.m. which covers all the counties in the Tulsa metro.

The NWS website says residents of the area should expect widespread, heavy rainfall in the 2 to 4 inch range, with locally heavier amounts possible.

The storms will “train” north to south, meteorologists say, meaning they'll continue to develop and pour rain repeatedly over the same areas.

The good news is that the ground has had a chance to dry out since the heavy rain and flooding of late May and early June, so it will be able to soak up some of the new precipitation.

That won't matter as much, however, if the storms line up right over the city, NWS Meteorologist Mike Lacy told KRMG Friday.

“In a city, you can't handle that kind of water as well as if it was out in the country, because of all the concrete and asphalt,” Lacy said.

He added that the risk of severe weather remains fairly minimal, though it's a bit higher west of the metro.
