Feds spend $1.6M on I-244 Partial Removal Study in Tulsa

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced a $1.6 million grant for Tulsa to study the possible removal of a part of I-244 in north Tulsa.

It’s part of the federal government’s Reconnecting Communities Pilot Program, which is investing $185 million to reconnect communities that the government considers to be cut off from opportunity and burdened by past transportation infrastructure decisions.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who visited Tulsa and the Greenwood District last year, said I-244 acts as a physical and social barrier between the predominately Black community in the Greenwood neighborhood and the rest of downtown Tulsa.

Tulsa is one of 45 projects receiving $185 million in similar grants.

USDOT estimates at least 1 million people and businesses were displaced in the buildout of the national highway system.
