Crews battle a huge grass fire in Mannford

MANNFORD, Okla. — Multiple departments battled a grass fire near Mannford, according to the Freedom Hill Fire Department.

FHFD said the fire started around 12:15 p.m. near W. 61st St. and S. 385th W. Ave.

519 acres burned, but no homes or businesses were damaged, FHDH said.

FHDH said a few people were evacuated, but are back home now.

They also said no one was injured.

FHFD isn’t sure of the cause of the fire but thinks that dry and windy conditions contributed to the fire’s size.

To combat the fire, FHFD conducted a controlled burn.

“A backburn or controlled burn would be we intentionally light some of it on fire in our favor in order to get rid of some of the burning material so that we can have better control on what’s going on,” said FHFD Chief Tim Smythe.

FHFD said they were helped by several fire departments including Green Country, Bristow, Drumright, Keystone, Kellyville, North 38, Mannford, and Silver City Fire Departments.

They were also helped by Lincoln County Task Force and the BIA.

As for now, Smythe recommends that people keep their grass short, keep firewood away from their homes, and put distance between their homes and any woods.
