TULSA, Okla. — Union’s Rosa Parks Elementary has won this year’s “Best Overall School Garden” sponsored by the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Women’s Committee (OKFB).
This is the first-ever school garden contest held by the OKFB, celebrating the important role that school gardens have in communities’ engagement with agriculture, the school district said.
The school district said the school garden spreads into three sections, all facilitated with Global Gardens’ students and families: during school garden beds, individual gardens beds for after school program, and Family Food Farm garden beds.
Unique features of the Global Gardens site include a “Peace House,” where students can work together through conflicts, a sustainable rain barrel system that collects rain water and is used for garden watering, student art and murals scattered throughout the garden, and an outdoor cooking space that provides seed-to-plate experiences for students and families.
