Tulsa WWII veteran receives surprise party ahead of her 100th birthday

TULSA, Okla. — Winifred Dudely, a 99-year-old World War II veteran, got a surprise she will never forget Thursday.

Dozens of veterans, including three others who served during World War II, along with Dudley’s family and friends, helped plan a special, surprise celebration for her 100th birthday.

FOX23 captured Dudley’s reaction at her celebration Thursday at the Kirk of Hills Church near 61st and Yale.

“I’m thankful for this group and most of my buddies are already gone,” Dudley said. “Not too many of us lived, but I have great memories of those that I served with,” Dudley told FOX23.

“I know this really touched her,” said Dudley’s granddaughter Kelsey Sanchez. “It was just a really special moment to be a part of.”

Dudley served the U.S. as an electrical technician with the Air Transport Command during World War II. She told FOX23 about some of her worldwide travels.

“I’ve seen so many people, and they have meant so much to me,” Dudley said.

Dudley officially turns 100-years-old July 11, and her family describes her as a beacon of light and a bright person with great integrity. Her five children and 11 grandchildren all agree her spirit impacts everyone she has come into contact with.

“It was just wonderful to see everyone come out and celebrate her,” Sanchez said. “She was just filled with joy. It was a wonderful surprise for her.”

Another granddaughter, Courtney Dudley, recalled fond memories growing up with her grandmother.

“Growing up, I would actually go over and spend probably almost everyday in the summer at her house, getting to play with the cousins and volunteering with her, and she has been such an important impact to our lives.”
