Stand-off and hostage situation in Sand Springs ends without injury

A Sand Springs couple is reportedly held at gunpoint in their home in the Rolling Oaks neighborhood in Sand Springs by their own son.  Police say the 24-year-old broke into the home before 4am Tuesday morning and has a mental health issue that requires medication.  Sand Springs Assistant Police Chief Mike Carter says the man was off his medication and will be evaluated.  He says police are treating this case more of a medical condition and said the man would not be going to jail immediately.

A street in the Rolling Oaks neighborhood, off of West 41st in Sand Springs and behind Tulsa Community College’s west campus, was blocked off for the situation that ended about 8:30am.

Police were negotiating with the young man to release his parents and surrender.  Carter says the department’s throw phone was broken so an officer threw his own cell phone into the home so authorities could talk with armed man.  The department borrowed Tulsa County’s equipment and the situation was resolved without anyone getting hurt.

Police say the young man had a 9-millimeter handgun and released his mother and then about an hour later released his father.  The father could be seen exiting the home with a family pet in his arms.

Asked what charges the man faces, Carter said he did not know and did not want to speculate.
