One killed, one missing in EF-4 tornado in Barnsdall

Update 05/07 4pm: The National Weather Service in Tulsa said their survey team found low end EF-4 damage in Barnsdall.

That rating remains preliminary as surveys continue.

Authorities are searching for Wayne Hogue, whose mobile home was destroyed in the tornado.

The Osage County Sheriff’s Office said they would be enforcing a 9pm curfew in Barnsdall starting tonight (May 7th) due to safety concerns. Deputies said people who need food, water or shelter can go to the Lighthouse Family Worship Center.

Update 05/07 1 a.m.: At 1 a.m., the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (ODEM) provided a situation update.

ODEM said the following damage has been reported:

The Osage County Emergency Management is reporting tornado damage in the Barnsdall area.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is reporting 30 to 40 homes damaged in the Barnsdall area. A natural gas leak is also reported.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health said a nursing home was damaged and patients are being evacuated. No nursing home patients have injuries requiring hospital care.

The Regional Medical Response System is coordinating the evacuation and providing assistance with medical needs.

ODEM also said a natural gas leak was reported in Barnsdall and some roads are closed due to debris in the road.

According to ODEM, an American Red Cross shelter is open in Osage County.

The shelter is at the Osage County Fairgrounds at 320 Skyline Drive Pawhuska.

Osage County Sheriff Eddie Virden also provided an update.

Virden said the death was not at a nursing home, it was on the outskirts of town. He also said a shelter is opening in Pawhuska at the Women’s Building at the Fairgrounds.

Residents who have been impacted by storms can report damages to their property to the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management at damage.ok.gov.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service Office were preparing for long-track tornados, large hail, and flooding earlier in the day on Monday.

By Monday night, shortly after 9:30, a confirmed tornado touched down in Barnsdall.

The Osage County Sheriff’s Office confirms that one person was killed. No word yet on the victim’s identity.

FOX23 and KRMG Meteorologist Mike Grogan says the damage area is at least a mile wide.

A roof was torn off of a nursing home, but thankfully no one was injured there.

KRMG Reporter Russell Mills says he can hear hissing everywhere due to so many gas leaks.

Cell phone use is tough for Barnsdall residents as the cell towers aren’t working.
