Quik Trip opens 'Store #1' next month

Even though Quik Trip operates well over 600 stores these days, its newest location in Tulsa at 51st and Peoria will carry the designation of Store #1, because it's very close to the site of the very first Quik Trip that Chester Cadieux opened in 1958.

The address of that store was 5204 S. Peoria, although it's no longer there.

"Y'know we only had one employee back then and that was Chester," said company spokesman Mike Thornbrugh.  "Now we have about 13,000. Lot of changes and hopefully they've all been positive."

Quik Trip marked its 54th anniversary on Tuesday.

The new store sits on the site where the Camelot Hotel once stood.

It will feature Quik Trip's larger, more upscale "Generation 3" design, like the store at 15th and Denver and elsewhere.

Thornbrugh said over time, the goal is for the Generation 3 layout to eventually become the norm for all Quik Trip stores.

"We have about 50 of them in operation right now and about another 38 to 40 that are under construction," he said.
