Owasso teacher faces murder charge in deadly shooting

OWASSO, Okla. — Owasso Police said they responded to a domestic violence incident around 11:20am Sunday.

OPD said when they arrived at the home near 106th Street North and Garnett, they found a woman with a gunshot wound.

Police said 26-year-old Atia Kamare Fields was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died.

After investigating the shooting, officers said 28-year-old Essence Fields was arrested for second-degree murder.

According to the arrest report, the suspect called 911 and said she had shot her wife. OPD said Essence Fields claimed to have been arguing with her wife and grabbed her firearm.

The report said Fields told police her wife was by the bedroom door and reached for something, so she shot her. The report indicates Essence Fields said she thought Atia was reaching for a gun.

OPD said a search warrant was obtained and officers found a pistol near the foot of the bed that appeared to have been fired and a shell casing on the bed.

Officers said a second gun was found under the bed, unloaded, with two magazines nearby. Police said the magazines were loaded, but were under what appeared to be an athletic brace and were apparently dusty.

Officers said there was a 10-year-old child in the home at the time of the shooting. We’re told the child was released to a family member.

Essence Fields was listed as a 4th grade teacher at Mills Elementary in Owasso.

The school district sent KRMG the following statement:

“Late last night, Owasso Public Schools was made aware of a legal situation involving one of its teachers that has resulted in their removal from the classroom. The district will have additional counselors [SIC] available to students and staff members should they need support as we navigate the situation. Due to the ongoing police investigation, we are unable to comment further.” -Owasso Public Schools
