Army Ranger strangled to death in parachute training accident

The accident happened as the Rangers were on a training jump near Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia.
The soldier jumped and his chute opened and he landed without incident. Once on the ground strong winds caught his parachute and began dragging him along the ground.
The Ranger was dragged more than 300 feet before other soldiers could catch up. When they did they found the man tangled in straps, his harness and with cord wrapped around his neck.
Responders cut the cords away from the man’s throat but he was already dead.
A spokesman for the Army said "we're not sure what caused the parachute to do this, it's something we've never seen before."
Army officials aren’t sure if the Ranger was tangled before he landed or after. They also say despite the fact he was wearing a helmet he may have been knocked out by the landing adding to the likelihood he could have gotten tangled while being dragged.
The soldier's name is being withheld until relatives are notified.
