OKMULGEE, Okla. — The Okmulgee Police Department says a man is dead and a woman was injured after a shooting.
Chief Joe Prentice says officers received a call about a shooting at a home near South Miami Ave. and East 20th St. around 7 p.m. Wednesday night.
Chief Prentice says the caller told police that a man inside the home fired multiple shots at her and that she had locked herself in the bathroom.
While heading to the scene, police say officers were informed that the woman had been shot at least once.
Prentice says the first officer on the scene went into the house and found the woman had been shot once in the hand. While tending to her, Okmulgee police say the man who allegedly fired the shots began to raise his gun toward the officer.
Prentice says the officer backed away and was able to safely escort the woman out of the house.
Once outside the house, police say the officer and a dispatcher who still hand an open line heard another gunshot.
The woman was taken to a local hospital and more officers were called to the scene to assist.
Okmulgee police say they made numerous attempts to make contact with the male suspect but received no response.
At around 8 p.m., police say dispatch reported hearing someone moaning on the open phone line and the decision was made to enter the house.
Officers found the male suspect in a bedroom suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest.
Police say they cleared the house and called medical personnel in to provide first aid to the suspect. The suspect was then taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. He was pronounced dead just before 9 p.m. Wednesday night.
Prentice says the names of those involved are being withheld until the family of the victim can be notified.
Prentice says the woman is 65 years old and the man is 66 years old, both residents of Okmulgee.
