Worker dies after falling from construction site

The man was working on the new WPX building in downtown Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Police have identified the man who fell to his death at a construction site in downtown Tulsa.

Police and firefighters responded to the scene near 2nd and Detroit around 7 a.m. at the WPX Building construction site. They say 52-year-old Abel Garcia was found on the 5th floor, lying on a concrete pad after apparently having fallen through a wooden catwalk.

Investigators say witnesses told them Garcia was not wearing a safety harness and fell about five stories through a hole. They say Garcia was on the 11th floor of the building when he fell.

The majority of workers on site were sent home for the day.

Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.

Flintco Construction, the company in charge of the site, issued the following statement:

“We regret to report there was an incident at a Flintco project in Tulsa, Oklahoma that resulted in a trade partner fatality. Our Flintco construction community is heartbroken. We are actively gathering information on the incident in full cooperation with OSHA and local authorities, while assisting them in their investigation. Until we can meet with the family, which is our primary concern at this time, and those on-site who are also affected by the tragedy, Flintco is not releasing any details about the incident. Flintco will share information once the details have been confirmed.”
