Video: Meet Tulsa's new athletic ambassador, Goldie

Five month old Golden Retriever is on-board

She’s small, furry and she loves to roll on the new turf at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

Goldie is a five month old Golden Retriever and she is also the new ambassador for The University of Tulsa’s athletic programs.

“I love it, she’s just adorable” one student said as she watched Goldie play on a beautiful August Monday.

“I’m working on her basics right now” Susan began.  “Recall, sit, stay, down stay, working on retrieving, “Susan added.

Goldie’s trainer is Susan Owen, she told KRMG her playful friend is learning.

But there are two skills Goldie will have to master big time.

Number one, “we’re working on her running away from me while we run after her since she’ll have to get used to that when she runs out in front of the football team.”

And number two, “we’re starting to work on her getting the tee but right now it’s a little heavy for her.”

This year Goldie will ride onto the field on a golf cart but starting next year, she’ll run out before the team.

Goldie will not replace the official mascot Captain Cane. Instead she will be an ambassador who makes appearances and creates smiles.

When asked why a team named after a tropical storm adopted a dog as a mascot a student told us this.

“Well I mean it’s gold, we’re the Golden Hurricane,” he shrugged. “Makes as much sense as Captain Cane does.

He has a point there.

Goldie will make her game day debut on September 7th when Tulsa hosts Colorado State.

You’ll hear every Tulsa football and basketball game on FM102.3/AM740, KRMG.
