TULSA, Okla. — Members of the Tulsa Fire Department (TFD) are going above and beyond to help a north Tulsa family dealing with a tragic loss after a house fire.
Crews responded to the fire on January 2 in north Tulsa near East Pine and North Yale where the Tulsa Fire Department said they found a man dead inside the home.
Tulsa firefighter for 16 years and Station 17 Lieutenant Jason Smart Tulsa responded to the scene.
Smart said one of his fellow firefighters is friends with the family of the man and disabled veteran who died. Now, several firefighters are donating to a GoFundMe to help his family.
“Specifically when it happens in the community that you work in, the neighborhood that you’re there to protect, it affects you,” he told FOX23.
“Station 17, we feel like we’re an integral part of the neighborhood and community, this gave us an opportunity to reach out and provide some support to that family who in a horrible time needed that support,” said Smart.
Smart told FOX23 the money will help with funeral costs and getting the family back on their feet after the home was destroyed. You can donate here.
TFD is also always promoting and stressing the need for working smoke detectors.
“We know smoke detectors do save lives,” said Smart.
