Officers with the Alamosa Police Department were called to Walmart on Feb. 9 for a report of a kidnapping in progress. When officers arrived at the store, they determined that a woman, identified as Kimberli Jones, “grabbed a young child from a shopping cart and attempted to kidnap the child,” police said in a news release.

Police credited bystanders at the store with stopping the suspect and restraining her until officers arrived at the scene.

Jones was charged with kidnapping, felony menacing, child abuse and disorderly conduct, police said.

Investigators did not say whether Jones knew the victim, KKTV reported.

The child was returned to its parents, and police said they do not believe there is any danger to the public, The Denver Post reported.
