(HONOLULU) (AP) – Nearly 400 unknown USS Oklahoma crew members are buried at Honolulu's national cemetery.
The sailors and Marines were killed in the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
For decades, their relatives have lived without knowing for sure. The families want their relatives identified.
A senior Defense Department official visited the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific on Sunday.
The military now has the scientific capability.
Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency interim director Navy Rear Adm. Michael Franken says Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Christine Wormuth wanted to get a sense of the unknowns buried at the cemetery.
There’s no word on when the Pentagon will make a decision.
