Americans don't trust the government to protect their privacy

Study shows Americans hold strong views about privacy

A new Pew Research Center survey finds that Americans strongly value the privacy of their personal information and communications, with more than 90 percent saying controlling who gets access to it is important to them.

However, they said they have little trust in the government or companies to protect it, and half said they felt they had little or no control over their data.

Nearly two-thirds said the current limits on phone and Internet data collected by the government aren't adequate, and 76 percent said they don't have much confidence in online advertisers to keep their information private.

Similarly, more than two-thirds said they weren't confident that social media sites, search engine providers or online video sites protect their information.
