UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A mother gave birth to a baby then abandoned the newborn Wednesday in a plastic bag under a pile of leaves, investigators said.

A family member brought Casey Marie Thomas, 24, to a hospital for a severe amount of blood loss and medical staff realized she had recently given birth, WBTV reported.

Thomas denied she was pregnant.

The child was taken to a hospital and is in good condition.

However, investigators went to the home and could hear the faint cries of the newborn. He was found in a bag and hidden under leaves near a fence, WBTV reported.

Thomas was arrested and charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse, according to arrest records.
