TULSA, Okla. — Rain transitioned to freezing rain early Wednesday morning, but did not cause major travel issues.
Precipitation tapered off later in the morning.
The snow moved into the Tulsa are right before the evening commute Wednesday.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning that will last through 12:00 AM Friday.
Forecasters are calling for several inches of snow to fall between Wednesday night and Thursday, so the morning commute could be dicey.
They say freezing rain and sleet will be the primary threats on Thursday morning.
As temperatures drop into the 20′s icing will start to be a problem on the roadways.
Forecasters said a mixture of freezing rain, sleet, and snow is possible with accumulations of 4 to 6 inches with local amounts up to 8 inches.
The National Weather Service said the heaviest snow totals could fall along and north of I-44.
A winter storm watch will be in effect from late Tuesday night through Thursday evening for all of eastern Oklahoma.
Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Tulsa say heavy mixed precipitation is possible.
Precipitation starts as freezing rain, then transitions to sleet and eventually snow.
“This will start as rain above freezing all day tomorrow,” said FOX23 and KRMG Chief Meteorologist James Aydelott. “We’ll fall into the 20s during the day Wednesday, an icy mix of freezing rain and sleet. That will gradually transition over to snow. Still, a lot of uncertainly because more sleet means less snow.”
Power outages and tree damage are possible due to the ice.
Travel could be nearly impossible.
