Veteran 'bakes to death' in overheated cell

56-year-old former Marine arrested for misdemeanor trespassing, sleeping in stairwell

The warden of a New York City jail on Rikers Island where a homeless, mentally ill veteran "baked to death" in an overheated cell has been demoted and transferred to another unit that doesn't house mentally ill inmates.

An investigation found that Rose Argo didn't appear to be directly involved or negligent in the death of Jerome Murdough, a 56-year-old former Marine.

He was arrested for misdemeanor trespassing for sleeping in a stairwell.

Officials say the temperature in his cell reached at least 100 degrees.
