Tulsa police release name of officer involved in fatal shooting of man with BB gun

The Tulsa Police Department has released the name of the officer who shot and killed a man late Saturday night at an apartment complex after the man apparently pointed a weapon at officers.

Ofcr. Daniel Madewell remains on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting incident, which occurred at the Copper Mill Apartments near E. 71st St. and S. Yale Ave. about 11:00 p.m. Saturday.

Officers had responded to a call about a suicidal man, and say he had threatened his roommate with a knife and had refused repeated demands to exit the apartment peacefully.

The weapon appeared to be a rifle, fitted with a scope, and when he pointed it at officers, police say, Madewell opened fire.

Two hours or so into the standoff, the man came out onto the balcony, which officers say he had done several times before, but this time he had a weapon in his hands.

After police entered the apartment and recovered the weapon, they discovered it was a BB gun.

The District Attorney will determine whether the shooting was justified.

Police have not released the name of the dead man, as they're still trying to notify  his family members of his death.
