So far this year, there have been 188 violent crimes in a one mile radius around the intersection of 61st Street and South Peoria.
3 homicides.
9 rapes.
133 aggravated assaults.
43 robberies.
"It is a crime-ridden area," says Carol Bush, executive director of the Tulsa Crime Commission.
But, she says, law-abiding neighbors are coming together to fight crime.
"There are also a lot of good things that are happening," says Bush.
For instance, four new "Alert Neighbor" crime watch groups have sprung up in the area.
"What they are trying to do," says Bush, "is become more pro-active in working with the police."
And, while she says she thinks the police have been very responsive, she wonders if it might be time to do more.
"Maybe TPD needs to do one of their sweeps for gathering guns and drugs."
