Tulsa City Councilor wants to allay fears about construction on Lewis Avenue

The project is to build a pedestrian bridge over a creek, not tear up the road again

A Tulsa City Councilor decided to take to social media to allay fears about a new construction project on South Lewis Avenue near 26th Street.

District 9 Councilor G. T. Bynum tweeted "Work on Lewis, 21st/31st is installation of a pedestrian bridge. Soon sewer line will be replaced at 21st/Lewis. Neither are street defects."

KRMG spoke with him to ask for details on his message.

"People were worried that this long project was just completed, and now to see a bunch of construction equipment back there concerned a lot of folks," he told KRMG.

He said he's heard from several friends and constituents concerned that Lewis was about to get torn up again, when the city just completed a long and expensive road project in that area.

He explained that the project actually doesn't involve the road, but rather the sidewalk -- and the inability of pedestrians to get across the creek that flows under Lewis Avenue without having to cross the road.

The city's building a pedestrian bridge to solve that problem, and make it much safer for people to walk there.

Traffic is limited to one lane in each direction for a few blocks there, but the roadway will not have to be torn up again, he said.

His tweet also mentions an upcoming project to replace a sewer line at 21st Street and Lewis, which he says will last 60 days.

He didn't have a target date for the completion of the bridge.
