If you're heading to the lake this weekend, there are some things to keep in mind to ensure the memories you make are good ones.
First, levels at many area lakes are lower than normal because of the drought.
Boaters are advised to check with workers at local marinas for specifics about individual lakes before heading out.
As of this writing, Copan Lake in Washington County is under a blue-green algae alert.
Last summer blue-green algae was a major issue at many area lakes.
People are encouraged to avoid contact with the water at the Post Oak Beach area.
Skylar Mcelhaney is with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.
She warns certain bacteria, viruses and protozoa can really pose trouble: “We encourage people to get out and enjoy the state’s natural bodies of water, but we want them to be safe and take certain precautions." Those precautions include holding your nose or wearing nose plugs when jumping into the water, avoid swallowing water when swimming, and don't swim near storm drains.
Also wear ear plugs to prevent ear infections wear swim goggles.
