Photographer James Morgan said the idea wasn’t well received at first.
Morgan proposed putting Queen Mary 2 Captain Kevin Oprey in a very precarious position.
“When I suggested we photograph the captain standing on the bulbous bow, they all looked at me like I was a tiny bit mad, but the fact it hadn’t been done was why we had to do it.”
Now everyone is glad he did.
The bulbous bow is a huge protrusion meant to break through the water, making the ship faster and more fuel efficient. The problem is, the giant piece of steel is slippery, near the water line and constantly bobbing up and down in the ocean.
The DailyMail reports it wasn't easy to make Captain Kevin Oprey look like he was walking on water.
As the shoot was about to begin the weather took a turn for the worse. That left Captain Oprey and Morgan with a “nervous five or six hours on the bridge,” waiting for things to improve.
The water eventually calmed and Oprey was put in place for his pictures.
The photos were taken off the coast of Bali to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the QM2's launching.
Two safety boats were used to watch over the captain while Morgan snapped the pictures from a third craft.
No matter how long it took, we can mostly agree, it’s really cool.
The Queen Mary 2 is the biggest ocean liner in the world at 1,132 feet long and 151,200 tons.
