Teenage football player dies after drinking too much Gatorade, water

Oliver held a 3.8 GPA

Zyrees Oliver downed four gallons of Gatorade and water after football practice. But the over consumption of liquid confused his body and caused the electrolytes in his body to become unbalanced.

That led to swelling in his brain and eventually, his death.

"He's already in heaven," his aunt, Nina Oliver told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution before Oliver was taken off a ventilator.

Zyrees was just one day away from starting his much-anticipated senior year of high school.

"It’s incomprehensible," she continued. "We had a healthy, beautiful, vibrant young man."

The teenager held a 3.8 GPA and was a star in both football and track.

His class and teammates honored him Friday at a payer circle by wearing team colors.

The high school confirmed they have assigned grief counselors to assist any students struggling with his death.
