The longest serving member of the high court told students, “one of the reason's God has been good to us is that we have done him honor.”
Speaking at a Catholic school in New Orleans and later at Colorado Christian University, Scalia went on to argue the separation of church and state doesn’t mean, “the government cannot favor religion over non-religion.”
Scalia explained “you can't favor one denomination over another but can't favor religion over non-religion?" The long-time justice paused before adding, “where did that come from?" Scalia added he's fine with a president or anyone else involving God in public discussions or presentations.
Scalia backed his statement by pointing out, "God has been very good to us. That we won the revolution was extraordinary. The Battle of Midway was extraordinary.”
“There’s nothing wrong with that,” he began. “It is in the best of American traditions, and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. I think we have to fight that tendency of the secularists to impose it on all of us through the Constitution.”
Scalia closed by adding if American’s long for a more secular government they can “enact that by statute. But to say that’s what the Constitution requires is utterly absurd.”
