Study: 97 percent of raw chicken contaminated

Buying organic doesn't help

Consumer reports conducted a study of the quality of chicken sold in grocery stores.

The results showed nearly all of raw chicken breast found in grocery stores nationwide contains potentially dangerous bacteria. The study spanned 26 states, testing over 300 raw chicken breasts.

To make matters worse, many of the bacteria samples are resistant to multiple antibiotics.

-Don’t thaw your chicken in the sink or run faucet water over it.

Consumer Reports’ Director of Consumer Safety Urvashi Rangan points out that buying organic isn’t any safer. Rangan  also gave some pointers on handling raw chicken at home.

-Use a dedicated cutting board for the raw chicken and immediately put that cutting board in the dishwasher.

-Ensure chicken is fully cooked.

The only way to verify it’s done is with a meat thermometer.

In other news, just 37 percent of consumers own a meat thermometer.
