The first round of a significant winter storm is underway.
Meteorologists with the Tulsa office of the National Weather Service say a mixed bag of wintry precipitation will expand into eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas through the morning hours.
Significant icing is likely across southeast Oklahoma and west central Arkansas through the afternoon, with lighter amounts of sleet and possibly some snow farther north.
The NWS says another round of winter precipitation is expected later tonight and into Friday morning before tapering off by early Friday afternoon.
Temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing so any precipitation that does fall today will result in hazardous driving conditions.
This will include additional dangerous icing and possible power outages across southeast Oklahoma and west central Arkansas.
Locations between I-40 and I-44 should see significant sleet and snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, with lighter amounts toward the Kansas border.
NWS meteorologists predict a good chance of yet another round of light snow, sleet and freezing rain Saturday night into Sunday.
