Senate considering bill allowing teachers to carry guns in the classroom

Teachers would be allowed to carry a gun in the classroom if Oklahoma senators pull the trigger on House Bill 1062 that has already passed the House.

Under the bill, teachers would still have to pass certain training and certification requirements before being allowed to carry in the classroom.

HB 1062 would set those requirements at a minimum of 120 hours of education and training.

KRMG asked Tulsans for their thoughts on arming teachers. Responses included:

After completing the training, school personnel would have statewide peace officer powers while performing official duties as an employee of the school.

"I think its ridiculous to do it. What they need is metal detectors like they do at the airport."

"The liability of the school district is going to be heightened if they don't have that kind of training and certification."
