The total lunar eclipse began around 3:00 a.m. CT and will continue through about 5:30 a.m. with the colors changing and fading as time passes.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes behind the Earth and is completely blocked from the light of the sun. The light picks up shades of yellow, orange, and red as it bends through Earth's atmosphere and lights up the moon.
This Blood Moon is part of a "tetrad," a series of four eclipses that will occur in the next few years.
They will also take place on four significant religious days. Two, including this years, fall on the Jewish holiday of Passover. The other two will occur on the another Jewissh holy day, the Feast of the Tabernacles.
Several unusual things accompany this tetrad. First, all of the spectacles will be viewable from the United States with the central US having clear views, weather permitting.
