Rock Creek bridge closed in Sapulpa for safety concerns

It's served for nearly a century, but the Number 18 bridge over Rock Creek in Sapulpa is now out of commission, after failing a safety inspection.

Assistant City Manager David Gilliland says the bridge was damaged after being hit by some kind of vehicle and wasn't repaired properly, so it's being shut down.

He's not sure when, of even if, it can be fixed.

He said the Rock Creek bridge is one of the few remaining steel-truss bridges anywhere in the country.

"For this year, we don't have any money in our budget to do any bridge-repair with, especially of this type," Gilliland said.

It was built in 1921 and was put on the National Historic Register in 1995.

Gilliland said about a dozen households are directly affected by the closure and said the people who live there will have to drive about a mile further to access a different route across the creek.
