Research says casual sex leads to depression, anxiety

Study taken amoung college age people

The research claims there is an adverse relationship between pre-marital/casual sex and mental health.

Specifically, the study showed those who engaged in the amorous activity were far more likely to be depressed and anxious than those who didn't

The paper is published in The Journal of Sex Research and is called "Risky Business: Is There an Association Between Casual Sex and Mental Health Among Emerging Adults?"

The study looked at nearly 4,000 students from 30 schools in all regions of the country. All were straight and ages ranged from 18 to 25 years old.

Researchers defined casual sex as sex with someone they had known for less than a week.

“For emerging-adult college students, engaging in casual sex may elevate risk for negative psychological outcomes,” the researchers say.

The study seems to say that the “hook up” culture may be giving way to a more reserved attitude toward sex.
