RED ALERT TRAFFIC: Huge metal pipe blocks four lanes of highway

A chain to remove the 50,000 pound pipe broke due to the weight

Oklahoma Highway Patrol is on the scene of a semi-truck that lost its load on I-244 near Lewis.

Crews are having a hard time removing the heavy pipe that's blocking the eastbound lanes.

For a time, concrete chunks blocked two westbound lanes and the eastbound lanes were completely blocked by the pipe.

The pipe itself is about 60 feet long and weighs 50,000 pounds.

Remarkably, no other vehicles were damaged and no one was injured in the incident.

The driver says chains holding the pipe in place on the flatbed truck broke, causing the load to shift and fall from the truck.

About 10:30 a.m. ODOT used a truck and a Bobcat tractor to push and pull the pipe to a point where they could release it and allow it to roll to the edge of the road, allowing them to open up one eastbound lane.

All westbound lanes were opened about the same time.
