'Quarter on ice' trick tells you how long power was out

Handy for both hurricanes and winter storms

Want to know how long the power was out while you were away?

A Facebook user has a trick.

Delish.com says she had the idea for people in the areas hit by Hurricane Matthew, but it might be handy for us here too during winter storms.

If you come back and the quarter is at the bottom (whether the water refroze or not), then you know the food in your freezer is probably bad.

She said freeze a cup of water and put a quarter on top.

One commenter to her post said you can set an ice cube in the corner of the freezer, and if it's gone, you probably can draw the same conclusion.

But it's probably not as much fun as the quarter trick.
