Plane crashes to ground during training at McAlester airport

Student pilot, instructor on board when engine sputters

A pilot and his instructor are recovering after their single-engine airplane crashes near the McAlester airport.

The manager of McAlester Regional Airport says two men were injured when the airplane they were in apparently lost power and went off a runway at the airport.

Butch Mellor tells us the aircraft was doing touch and go landings and takeoffs Sunday morning when it went off the runway.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Capt. Paul Timmons told reporters the plane was carrying a student pilot and an instructor.

He said federal safety officials will investigate the incident.

Both men were hospitalized with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.
