The pilot had already checked his prosthetic left arm before he began his landing procedures.
However, as he began a “flare maneuver,” things got interesting.
The Air Accident Investigation Bureau in Great Britain explained, “as he made the flare maneuver, his prosthetic limb became detached from the yoke clamp, depriving him of control of the aircraft."
The report goes on to say the landing was successful, albeit hard.
The report says the pilot quickly decided to fly one-handed because he didn’t believe there was enough time for the copilot to safely take over.
"He did this, but with power still applied, and possibly a gust affecting the aircraft, a normal touchdown was followed by a bounce, from which the aircraft landed heavily."
The incident happened in February on a Flybe airlines flight from Birmingham to Belfast with 47 passengers onboard. The report was issued this week.
No one was hurt but the agency noted the pilot needed to be, "more cautious about checking the attachment on his prosthesis."
