Petition to put storm shelters in Oklahoma schools passes through Tulsa

Take Shelter Oklahoma is giving it another go

The group behind the petition is at it for the second time.

Last time, the efforts were put on hold when the petition died in the Supreme Court after a dispute over the way it would show up on the ballot.

Now, all the kinks are worked out and they are back out there collecting signatures. They need about 160,000 to get the petition on the ballot. The goal is to get 3,000 signatures in each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties. That would give them an additional 50,000 over what they need.

The group spent some time in Tulsa this week to spread the word. With each stop they make, they look to find others who can help go around and get signatures.

The petition calls for a $500 million bond issue to pay for shelters every school. Each school district would make the decision on the details of how big and where they would be placed within the building.

You can get the petition sheet online and send it in if you want to participate.
