TULSA, Okla. — The local group “We Are 788″ is fighting to decriminalize certain marijuana charges.
The group is behind State Question 812, which is a criminal justice reform bill that would allow people to get out of jail if they’re only locked up for certain marijuana possession charges.
It would allow records to be expunged and prevent people from going to jail in the future for possessing marijuana.
Now they’re in the signature-gathering phase, which means they’re trying to get 180,000 signatures, so SQ812 can be put on the November ballot and decided on by voters.
The group says it’s not a criminal offense for patients, so it shouldn’t be a criminal offense for non-patients.
They’re also looking for 2,000 volunteers to go out Sept. 12 and 13 throughout Oklahoma to collect signatures.
“This Article shall decriminalize the following offenses: a. Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (Marijuana);b. Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (Marijuana) with the Intent to Distribute;c. Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (Marijuana) within 2,000 Feet of a School or Public Park; d. Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (Marijuana) in the Presence of a Minor Child;e. Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (Marijuana) without a Tax Stamp; and f. Possession of Proceeds Derived from a Violation of the Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Act, to wit any of the crimes listed in sections a through e herein.”
