An armed man turned on an Oklahoma City police officer and opened fire, hitting the officer -- who then returned fire, killing the suspect Friday afternoon.
It began a little before 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Hefner Road and Western in the northwest part of the city.
Two officers working an overtime operation targeting crime in the area were "attempting to make contact" with the man, according to OKC Capt. Dexter Nelson.
The officers followed in their car, and then one of them got out to try and catch the man on foot.
The man ran from the 7-11 parking lot on the southwest corner of the intersection to another business on the northeast corner.
"As the officer approached on foot, the suspect drew a weapon and shot the officer. As the officer went down, he returned fire, shooting and killing the suspect," Nelson told KRMG.
He said it's unknown early in the investigation exactly why the officers were trying to talk with the suspect.
The officer was transported to the hospital in stable condition with "non-life threatening injuries," according to Nelson.
Investigators have not released any names of those involved yet.
