The new type of traffic signal is becoming more and more common around the country and will likely one day be the new normal.
City officials in Broken Arrow say the intersection under construction at Tucson and Aspen will feature the flashing yellow left-turn arrow.
“This will allow citizens to make a left turn when it’s safe to do so and keep traffic from backing up in left turn lanes.” Lee Zirk, Broken Arrow General Services Director said.
The flashing yellow arrow will only be found in intersections that have a dedicated left turn lane.
The signal will still have red and green lights and there will be two yellow arrows. One yellow arrow represents what we all know, the signal will soon turn red. The second yellow arrow will be the one that flashes telling drivers it’s okay to turn left when safe.
The city wants drivers to be familiar with the signal when it is turned on sometime in mid-September or mid-October. A second signal with the flashing arrow will be installed on Tucson at Redbud at a later time.
