New superbug bacteria found in the U.S.

Fatality rates possibly up to 50%

The germs called Enterobacteriaceae are resistant to even the strongest antibiotics and have already been found in hospitals in 42 states.

Doctors call CRE a “nightmare bacteria” and warned that if it isn’t dealt with quickly it could spread even further.

Thomas Frieden is the director of the  CDC, he terms the bacteria as a "triple threat."  Frieden says that’s because even the strongest antibiotics, those used in the worst of cases have not been effective against them.

The bacteria is usually found in the gut and have quick access to the bloodstream where they can do the most damage.

Another worry is that the germs may be able to pass along their drug resistance to other bacteria.
