The nearly 18 feet long, 3,000-pound female nicknamed ‘Joan of Shark,’ was tagged earlier by fisheries' officers.
When the animal popped up close to shore again, several beaches were shut down for extended periods.
That’s when officials decided to go a step further.
They hope the device can provide some much-needed insight.
Workers in Western Australia lured Joan to a boat, restrained her and then replaced the old tag with a more sophisticated model. The operation was called “potentially a world first."
"For the next 10 years, we'll be able to keep a track of her movements, which is going to open up a whole new world," fisheries manager
Martin Kleeman said.
"We'll have a better understanding of the large-scale movements of white sharks."
They also hope to keep the beaches safer.
Seven people have been killed by sharks in the area over the last four years.
