Man tries to rob Broken Arrow Wal-Mart, shoots himself when police catch up

Store employees couldn’t get register open

Broken Arrow police say they were called to the Wal-Mart near 71st and 209th E Ave. on June 19 at about 6:15 p.m. to investigate an attempted robbery.

Store employees told police the suspect had a gun and demanded money from the Customer Service desk. Employees couldn’t get the drawer open, so the man left without incident.

Police say witnesses saw the suspect leave on a motorcycle, which was later found abandoned in a wooded area about a mile north of the store.

The officer did not fire any shots.

Police soon after stopped a pick-up truck in the area. The driver and passenger followed orders given by the patrol officer, but a man in the bed of the truck stood up with a gun to his head, fired the gun and died at the scene.

The robbery suspect ended up in the truck after he asked the two for a ride.

BAPD has identified the suspect as Peter Cangemi III.
