Man charged in Weleetka slayings pleads not guilty

A man charged with the slayings of two girls in Weleetka was arraigned Thursday morning.

Okfuskee County court clerk says 27-year-old Kevin Joe Sweat plead not guilty to first degree murder.

A change of venue for the trial has also been requested.  The clerk says the defense is asking for the new venue because of the "intense" media coverage of both cases.

Investigators say Sweat confessed to seeing the two girls on the side of a road.  He then got spooked by the victims and shot both girls with two different guns.

He's accused of killing 11-year-old Skyla Whitaker and 13-year-old Taylor Paschal-Placker on June 8, 2008.

Investigators say neither weapon has been found.
